Running in the Magic City part 1

The story of the 100% free Boston Qualifier...

Millinocket Marathon and Half was created in 2015 to bring a boost to struggling paper mill town. The first year was pretty casual, a runner/race director was like "hey, let's show some support for this community that was devastated by the closing of The Great American Paper Mill" and his runner friends were like "yes, let's". There was around 50 finishers.
In 2016 it became more official (but still free). Despite the freezing cold temps, they had about 500 finishers!
I don't really know how I heard about the race but it was probably on Facebook.  I seem to like to do things that make people call me "crazy" and when I saw pictures of a guy finishing with icicles in his beard, I knew it was a race for me.So last month, the boy and I went to Maine.I don't think the Run Millinocket event could have been more perfect! We arrived in Millinocket on Friday afternoon, got checked into the hotel and then headed out for festivities. This event is all about supporting this community, so they had a food drive, toy drop, baked goods and an artisan fare. We brought toys, ate the goods and got tons of great items from the fair.
Next we headed over to The Moose Drop In to pick up my pre purchased finisher's medal, race sticker, race shirt....How to describe Moose Drop In...well it is a custom tshirt shop with some other gift shop type stuff and it is run by the funniest most spirited group of ladies! They were so personable and were so excited about the runners coming to town and doubling their population!
After Moose Drop In, was Pancake and Pasta at the American Legion. You would think mass produced pancakes and spaghetti wouldn't be all that great but it really was. It was warm and delicious!
There were a couple of different options for night activities, and we decided to go with the holiday show at the high school. There was singing and dancing by kids of all ages and there was some great talent but as usual, the little kids stole the show.
After the show....we went to bed. Cause it was 8pm in Maine and had been totally dark for 4 hours.
